- Abstract
A four-screw extruder with reverse-threaded elements was designed to improve the uneven mixing and shearing effect of conventional four-screw extruders. Modelling using Solid works software, with the screws arranged in a square pattern. ANSYS/CFX software was used to analyse the movement of material in the flow channel of a four-screw extruder with a reverse threaded, comparing the changes in pressure, velocity vector and velocity flow diagram between the new screw and the conventional screw flow channel to investigate the shearing and mixing of material in the flow channel. The results showed that the new four-screw extruder has a reduced pressure building capacity due to the installation of re‐ verse threaded elements and back pressure on the screw in the same external situation; reverse threaded elements hinder material transport, reduce the transport speed of the material and increase the residence time of the material in the extruder; in the central area of the screw engagement, a reverse velocity flow line is generated and a reverse vortex is formed in the centre of the mixing area, which causes the material to flow back and enhances the mixing effect and shearing effect of the material.
