- Authors
Senier, Siobhan
- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses the effects of official government recognition of Native American tribes on native concepts of individual and community identity, with particular focus given to the newsletter "The Aroostook Indian" and the work of Mi'kmaq poet Alice Azure and Maliseet poet Mihku Paul. The newsletter's focus on the discrimination and poverty faced by off-reservation Indians is discussed, and the themes of mobility, community, and geography in the poetry of Azure and Paul are examined.
