- Abstract
Flipped learning is one increasingly popular area of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) adopted by teachers wishing to use classroom time more efficiently and provide more opportunities to focus their classes on the students and their ideas. However, as it has been pointed out in the past, one of the dangers of many areas of CALL is that although there might be immediate improvements in students' performances, these tend to wane over time. In the present study, the author looked at the weekly changes in students' efforts in an English composition class conducted in a flipped learning environment. The study, conducted with 31 Japanese university students, concentrated on effort through linguistic output by recording the number of words students wrote in compositions each week of the course. The results indicated that there was indeed an immediate spike in the effort exerted by students t(30) = 6.74, p < .001, d = 1.44. Furthermore, this output could be maintained over the 12 compositions conducted throughout course (F (11, 360) = 6.02, p < .001, η²p = .63). The author discusses an increased sense of learner agency among the students and the use of closed captions as reasons for the success in being able to increase and maintain students' efforts throughout the study.
