- Title
The Journey of a Ring or a Journey of Survival? Exploring Jewellery as Heritage Materiality.
- Authors
Story, Diana
- Abstract
A signet ring discovered atop a writing bureau in a family home sparked the author's curiosity concerning the story behind the object (fig. 1, left). Fashioned from base metal and dating from the 1940s, the ring's shank is deformed through continuous wear. The geometric banding on its shoulders and the graphic font of the engraved initials, so typical of the period, exhibit a constellation of tiny gouges and grooves. Gazing through a lens of family history, this piece emerges as an object of material heritage deeply intertwined with World War II, geographic localities in the Netherlands and Germany, as well as with the lived experience of a couple and their love story.
