- Abstract
Buffel grass (Pennisetum ciliare L.) from Africa was introduced into Tamaulipas, México, establishing more than 260 000 ha in the year 2007, in order to use it as fodder in animal diets under grazing conditions, since it presents dry matter yields of 14 to 20 t ha-1 year-1 and protein contents of 6-15%. It has also been established in arid and semiarid zones to avoid superficial runoffs and with this soil water erosion. It propagates rapidly in natural areas, so it has come to be considered an invading species; it is tolerant to drought and fires and consequently alters the fire regimes and with this it displaces the native flora and fauna. Buffel grass is an option for livestock diet, although due to its persistence and easy propagation, it can affect the equilibrium of the ecosystem.
