- Abstract
The article "Which cell type is suitable for what?" provides an insight into the technology of lithium-ion batteries and the different types of lithium cells. Lithium-ion batteries are used in various industrial applications, including electromobility. There are different types of lithium cells that have different characteristics and uses. Some examples are lithium cobalt oxide batteries (LCO) with high energy density, lithium manganese oxide cells (LMO) with lower costs and good charge/discharge performance, and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide cells (NMC) with a cell voltage of 3.7 V. The choice of cell type depends on specific requirements and applications. The electrification of transportation requires efficient raw material and recycling efficiency for lithium batteries. Nickel and lithium are important materials for battery manufacturing, but they are limited in availability. Lithium iron phosphate cells (LFP) are the most widely used form of lithium batteries and are used in various applications. The choice of battery form and materials has advantages and disadvantages. Battery recycling is possible, but there are not yet enough batteries for an economical industrial process. GS Yuasa uses prismatic stainless steel cases for their industrial lithium-ion batteries to ensure high reliability and performance.
