- Abstract
Objective To establish the normal reference value of elastic modulus in healthy liver by two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) technology, using pathology as the gold standard, based on the repeatability study. Methods Liver stiffness measurements were firstly performed in 42 healthy volunteers with 2D-SWE by a senior and a junior physician, respectively. The intra- and inter-difference of liver stiffness measured with 2D-SWE were investigated to discuss the methodology efficacy. By setting strict criterion, 128 histologically proven non-fibrosis subjects successfully underwent 2D-SWE preoperatively were enrolled in the research to determine the normal reference values of hepatic elasticity. Results 2D-SWE technique showed a good repeatability with the intra-class correlation coefficients of 0.984 and 0.978 for the senior and the junior physician, respectively. There was no significant difference in the measurement of hepatic stiffness between different operators (P=0.121). The hepatic stiffness of histologically proven normal livers measured with 2D-SWE ranged from 4.33 kPa to 7.40 kPa. The liver stiffness measurement was slightly higher in males than that in females (P=0.013), and there was no statistically difference between different age groups and mild inflammation groups (P=0.775, P=0.138). Conclusions 2D-SWE technology possesses high stability. Hepatic stiffness of 4.33-7.40 kPa is recommended to be the normal reference values, and it is a highly reliable basis of the diagnosis system for liver fibrosis.
