- Title
A POLLEN-ANALYTICAL RECONNAISSANCE IN TROPICAL EAST AFRICA.

- Abstract
During a recent expedition to Tropical East Africa the author studied the possibilities of utilizing pollen analysis in that part of the world. No pollen was found in soil or sediments formed under aerobic conditions, but large quantities were found in lake mud from the bottom of Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika and also in peat from a Carex runssoroensis-bog in the alpine belt of Ruwenzori. From the latter was obtained a profile about 1 m deep, which yielded a pollen diagram (Fig. 1). In order to facilitate interpretation of pollen diagrams from high level the actual pollen spectrum was studied in a few plant communities at different altitudes on Mt. Kenya and Ruwenzori (Tabs. 3–4, Figs. 2–5). Comparison of these spectra with each other and with the surrounding vegetation allowed some conclusions regarding the indicator value of the most important pollen types encountered (summarized in Tab. 5). In the light of these conclusions the pollen diagram from Ruwenzori is discussed. Finally the prospects of pollen analysis in Tropical East Africa are briefly commented upon.
