- Abstract
Working with Jean-Didier Urbain’s semiotic categories of expanse (étendue), space (espace) and place (lieu), this article examines the spatial poetics of the sea. These categories are used to explore the process of spatialising as a poetic device in Alexander von Warsberg’s travel writing: In Das Reich des Alkinoos (1878) he recollects, translates, and transposes idyllic reminiscences of Homer and Goethe in order to present the sea as a literary space and eventually as part of collectively shared memory.
