- Abstract
This contribution looks into various stages of Stefanie Zweig's autobiographical narrative. Zweig's life as well as her writing were influenced by her exile to Kenya, where she and her parents fled to escape from the persecution of the Nazis. These years in Africa are a recurring theme in her literary work, for example in her novels that are strongly influenced by her biography, but Zweig also processes these years by publishing personal documents. This resulted in the creation of Ein Mundvoll Erde (A Mouthful of Earth, 1980), Nirgendwo in Afrika (Nowhere in Africa, 1995), Irgendwo in Deutschland (Somewhere in Germany, 1996), Nur die Liebe bleibt (Only Love Remains, 2006) and Nirgendwo war Heimat (Nowhere Was Home, 2012). These works will be examined not only with regard to the change of their thematic focus, but also with regard to the narratological development of Zweig's narrativ. In doing so, we can ascertain a decrease in the presentation of her own experience, while at the same time we notice an increase in the perspectives from outside and in the documentary process.
