- Abstract
This article explores the relationship between ethics, the academic study of religion, and teacher training in the context of non-religious perspectives on religion in German-speaking countries. It argues that the academic study of religion should play a role in teacher training for the ethics-related parts of school subjects that include teaching about religion from a non-religious perspective. The article also critiques representations of religion in teaching materials, particularly the ideal of secular ethics and the concept of "religious ethics" as part of the "world religions paradigm." It suggests that the academic study of religion should focus on problematizing and critically reflecting on these approaches, as well as developing skills to deconstruct stereotypes and essentializing attributions related to religious and secular identities. Additionally, the article proposes a practice-theoretical approach to ethics that goes beyond the dichotomy of religious and secular ethics. Finally, it considers whether the academic study of religion can contribute to teacher training in the normative dimension of ethics.
