- Abstract
Public budget cuts and an increased level of competition put NPOs under pressure. FPOs increasingly mimic NPOs. Based on the microeconomic theory of production and the public finance theory of goods, our finding is that there is no substantial economic difference between NPOs and FPOs. There is no class of goods that can only be provided by NPOs. On the other hand, it is possible for FPOs to integrate membership fees, voluntary labor and donations into their business. Thus these elements thought to be exclusive to NPOs are in fact not. The question whether an organization should try to integrate these resources is a question of costs and benefits and not of the for- or nonprofit status, respectively.
