- Abstract
The article discusses the Jewish quality of the powerful character of Shylock in playwright William Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice." Topics covered include Shylock's link to Jacob in the Hebrew Bible, the play's centrality of covenant to the English Reformation, the latter's identification with Jewish history, and the impact of federalism on the Puritan movement in England. Also noted is Shakespeare's obscuration of the distinction between Jews and Christians in the play.
