- Title
Effect of Ciliates in Transfer of Plasmid-Mediated Quinolone-Resistance Genes in Bacteria.
- Authors
Balcázar, Jose Luis
- Abstract
The article presents a study which examined the role of the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila in promoting the transfer of plasmid-mediated quinolone-resistance (PMQR) genes in bacterial strains, Klebsiella oxytoca, Klebsiella oxytoca and Escherichia coli. The gene transfer was ascertained by both exposure of heat-treated ciliates to saline and treatment of bacterial culture with sodium azide and nalidixic acid, the result of which was further tested for antibiotic susceptibility.
