Indian Migration and Empire: A Colonial Genealogy of the Modern State.
- Authors
Montange, Leah
- Abstract
Radhika Mongia approaches I Indian Migration and Empire i with empirically and conceptually rich case studies across Mauritius, India, South Africa, and Canada between 1834 and 1917. Mongia constructs a genealogy of the modern colonial state throughout the book: in the stories she tells, the modern liberal state did not supplant colonialism, but rather originated within, and is intertwined with, colonialism. In this genealogy, Mongia details how the British Empire extended its authority and capacity to control Indian migration and mobility, through processes of rationalizing race-based mobility controls.
