- Abstract
In times of economic crisis and instabilities within the labor market, individuals' choices related to their professional lives become more important. To make these choices more consciously, individuals must know what they truly value, their skills, and their main interests, amongst other factors. In the face of that, this research had the objective of identifying and analyzing the career anchors of on duty servicepeople - officers, corporals, and privates who entered the Brazilian Army through compulsory military service. Thus, 224 young temporary servicemen from a military organization of the Brazilian Army in Taubaté-SP have taken part in this research. The overall results indicated that Security/Stability (SE, acronym in Portuguese) and Lifestyle (EV, acronym in Portuguese) anchors were the preferred ones. However, the preferred anchors within the officers group were EV and PD (Pure Challenge, acronym in Portuguese) and the preferred anchor within the corporals and privates group was SE. It is believed that the officers' choice is related to the fact that they pertain to Generation Z. On the other hand, the fact that corporals and privates have chosen the SE anchor, which indicates a preference for more traditional careers, can be related to the fact that: i) they pertain to more vulnerable groups (social, economic, and educational vulnerabilities); ii) the labor market is unstable and shows high unemployment rates; and, iii) they are part of a public institution which provides career security and stability to most of its employees.
