- Title
Classical voices in Buchanan's hexameter psalm paraphrases.
- Authors
Green, Roger P. H.
- Abstract
The psalm paraphrases of the Scottish Humanist George Buchanan include ten poems cast in the hexameter metre. This paper seeks to explain why, in each case, this metre may have recommended itself for a particular psalm, and to illustrate how in his work of poetic paraphrase he made use of the classical models and intertexts available to him. The Aeneid and Georgics of Virgil pre-dominate, but the writing of many other ancient Latin poets is clearly present, too. What emerges is the depth, range, and sensitivity of the learning demonstrated by Buchanan in his skilful blending of classical and Hebraic traditions in his deservedly famous work directed to devotional, educational, and literary objectives.
