- Abstract
In recent years, like other developing countries, Turkey has been one of the fastest growing power markets in the world with its young and growing population, rapid urbanization. In parallel, Turkey’s demand for electricity has been increasing steadily. Because of its indigenous sources are limited, it is a highly dependent country in terms of electricity production. So Turkey has to use its domestic energy source in terms of secure, reliable and affordable source. Coal particularly lignite is a logical choice. But the share of import in the electricity production of Turkey continually increases every year and electricity production from its domestic coal based power plants decreases. There are several reasons for decreasing coal usage. Most of coal-fired thermal power plants have been run by conventional methods and completed their economic life span. As these power plants age, both their efficiency declines and they face available capacity problems. In addition imported coal fired plants have been built recently. Installed capacity of lignite coal-fired plant was 20.42% of total installed capacity in 2002. Domestic hard coal-fired plant capacity was 1.05 % and imported coal-fired plants capacity was 0.45% of the total installed capacity in the same year. In 2012, domestic resources for lignite and hard coal-fired plant capacity decreased 14.27% and 0.59%, respectively. But installed capacity of imported coal-fired plants rose to 6.86%. This increase has gained an impetus from the year of 2009. Turkey has to use its domestic coal reserves efficiently. For this purpose Turkey has to establish new coal fired thermal plants with high efficiency. This will also help preventing environmental pollution. So that maximum usage of coal potential should be realized. In this paper, electricity production of Turkey during the period of 2002-2012 was outlined. Coal reserves and coal-fired power plants in the country were also introduced briefly. This study also reviews recent clean coal technologies. Suggestions on using of lignite reserves to produce electricity were mentioned.
