- Abstract
The ethanolic leaf extract of Verbena hastata was investigated for possible anti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects. Acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction tests, tail immersion method in mice were used to evaluate the anti-nociceptive effect of the extract. The antiinflammatory effect was investigated employing the albumin-induced hindpaw oedema in rats and yeast-induced hyperpyrexia was used to evaluate the antipyretic activity. The ethanolic extract of V.hastata exhibited significant dose dependent activity on the tested experimental animal models. The leaf extract produced a significant decrease in the acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction, an elevation of the pain threshold in the tail immersion test in mice. The extract also produced a significant inhibition on albumin induced hind paw in rats. A significant reduction in hyperpyrexia in rat was also produced by the extract. The result of the present study suggests that the ethanolic extract of the leaf of V. hastata possesses analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities.
