- Abstract
A rare decorated limestone sarcophagus chest and lid from Ashkelon and a lid from Nysa-Scythopolis have similar gabled features that represent a 'mixed kline-roofed type'. The sarcophagus from Ashkelon is decorated by garlands held by bulls' heads, a male figure-togatus and erotes, while the lid is decorated by a male figure reclining on a kline on one side and grape tendrils emerging from a krater on the other. Marble sarcophagi with kline-like lids from Athens are rare in Syria-Palaestina. Similar finely made marble sarcophagi from Proconnesus were widely copied in Syria-Palaestina, in most cases in coarse craftsmanship. The mixed-lid type unites trends of Asia Minor and Attica.
