- Abstract
The article analyzes the magazine "El Renacimiento" that was relaunched in 1894, 25 years after its first publication. The relaunch was unexpected and out of time, as the nationalism and aesthetic romanticism that characterized the newspaper were in decline. The article explores the literary and cultural contradictions of late 19th century Mexico that explain the apparent failure of the magazine. It highlights the influence of modernism and the reorientation towards bohemianism and French culture. The text provides information about the government of Porfirio Díaz in Mexico. The names of several officials who held important positions in his government are mentioned, such as Protasio Pérez Tagle, Pedro Ogazón, Ignacio Ramírez, Justo Benítez, and Vicente Riva Palacio. Díaz's search for pacifying the country and the internationalization of Mexico during his government are highlighted. The factors that contributed to the prosperity of the period are also mentioned, such as internal peace, natural wealth, European immigration, and the influx of foreign capital. Additionally, the text mentions the journalistic and literary activity of the time, as well as the existence of associations and gatherings that promoted initiatives and changes in society. The text talks about different literary associations in Mexico in the late 19th century. Names of people who were part of these associations, such as Ignacio Manuel Altamirano and José Juan Tablada, are mentioned. The influence of literary nationalism and the coexistence of different aesthetic currents in the magazines and publications of the time are highlighted. The change in the habits of writers, moving away from more formal spaces and approaching circles and brotherhoods, is also mentioned. The text talks about the Cuauhtémoc Literary Society and the publication of the literary newspaper El Renacimiento in Mexico in the late 19th century. It is highlighted that the young people who were part of this society belonged to the upper class and gathered to drink liquors and comment on the gossip of high society. It is mentioned that the publication paid attention to the young modernist promotion and that representatives of romanticism, nationalism, realism, and modernism coexisted in Mexico. Despite the importance of Altamirano in Mexican culture, the publication of the newspaper was destined to disappear due to the decline of nationalist doctrine. The article describes the creation and brief existence of the literary magazine El Renacimiento in Mexico in 1894. The magazine received praise and contributions from prominent writers of the time, and its first issue was released on January 7 of that year. Despite its short life, the magazine fulfilled its purpose and maintained an elegant and refined style. Bibliographic reviews and advertising were included in later issues, and the lack of economic resources was a challenge for the magazine. Finally, the last issue explained the reasons for its cancellation and highlighted the achievement of bringing together the works of several Mexican writers in a single volume. The article talks about the second period of the literary magazine El Renacimiento in 1894. Although this second period was not as successful as the first, the signatures that collaborated in it were not unworthy. The magazine was conceived as a space for any writer interested in publishing, and not as an author or group publication. The different groups of contributors are highlighted according to their age and literary experiences. Additionally, it is mentioned that the magazine covered topics beyond literature, such as history, archaeology, anthropology, music, and painting. The article analyzes the relationship between the Revista Azul and El Renacimiento, two literary publications in Mexico in the late 19th century. Although Enrique de Olavarría praised Revista Azul and its director Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera, there was a discrepancy regarding cosmopolitanism.
