The article discusses the attitude of neurologist S. Weir Mitchell towards same-sex attraction as seen in his 1886 novel "Roland Blake." It offers information on his career as a novelist. Topics covered include the Gilded Age ideas about romantic friendship between young men, the double standard towards depictions of lesbians and gay men, and Mitchell's own sexual orientation.
