- Title
Saints, Monks and Bishops; cult and authority in the diocese of Wells (England) before the Norman Conquest.
- Authors
Costen, Michael
- Abstract
The article provides information on dedications and other information pertaining to cult of saints in the Diocese of Bath and Wells in England, including dates and fairs and locations of holy wells. It highlights the identification of the three successive layers of dedications that has helped in assessing the relationship between secular and the regular branches of the church in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The evidence of how bishops were anxious to venture into a coherent policy of dedication on their own estates is also emphasized.
