- Abstract
This article compares the representations of conflict, and of the participants in that conflict, in the media and the audiences in Colombia and Northern Ireland. This comparison shows that, as much in the media as in the audiences of these two societies, there is a tendency to elaborate stigmatized and dualistic representations of the conflict and of the participants that lead to illegitimatize and depoliticize their motives and actions. These conditions affect the political and negotiated resolution of the conflicts, as well as the processes of social reconciliation. The article seeks to build tools and reflections useful to social communicators, journalists, university schools and, in general, to persons linked with the mass media, in order to formulate proposals that may contribute from these fields to the political resolution of conflicts. The article considers that the media is a privileged space for the construction of the public sphere and for the politicization of conflict.
