- Abstract
Objective: To study the variation of different patterns of talar articular facets on the superior surface of calcanei and to highlight its clinical significance. Design: The talar articular facets on the superior surface of adult human calcanei of North indian skeletons have been studied and classified into seven types to know the most common facetal pattern in north indian calcanei as it has clinical significance. Materials and Methods: 194 adult human calcanei of North Indian skeletons have been studied for the different patterns of talar articular facets on the superior surface of calcanei. The calcanei studied have been classified into seven types depending upon number and position of talar articular facets and the criteria laid down by other authors. Results: The most common facetal pattern observed in north indian calcanei is Type 3 (53.61%) followed by Type 5(20.62%). Type 1 and Type 7 have not been observed in the present study. In addition, some unique presentations have been observed in present study. Conclusion: Type 3 is the most common facetal pattern in north Indian calcanei. Orthopaedicians should be aware of the facetal patterns on the superior surface of calcanei while correcting foot deformities like pes palnus and also certain facetal patterns are more predisposed to subtalar joint arthritis.
