- Abstract
Wright's approach is part of the third quest for the historical Jesus. Through the methodology of critical realism, he seeks to understand Jesus in the light of the first century Jewish worldview and the grand history that embodied it. According to Wright, Jesus came as an eschatological prophet who appealed to that grand narrative, in which God would end the exile, defeat his enemies, and establish his rule over the nations. Jesus also came as the Messiah, as he indicated in his action in the temple and the last supper. As the Messiah representative of Israel, he took upon himself Israel's eschatological judgment and through his death redeemed the faithful remnant of Israel. God thus defeated Satan and his hosts, who were behind the evil in Rome and Israel. Evaluations of Wright's proposal have pointed out strengths and weaknesses. The proposal may be useful in the elaboration of a Christology of the cross that harmonizes with the Scriptures and is more relevant for Latin America.
