- Abstract
The article discusses and presents the first half of the U.S. Civil war memoir of Samuel Wheeler, a private in Company E of the First Loyal Virginia Cavalry Regiment, entitled "War Experiences of Samuel Wheeler," composed in 1911. The author comments on the service of Wheeler's brothers in the war, an injury he sustained to his right foot, and his efforts to receive a government pension after the war. The first section of the memoir comments on Wheeler's participation in the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863 and documents his experiences up until his arrival at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia.
