This article provides a historical overview of cannabis use and regulation in the United States and discusses the impact of current regulations on the failure of cannabis businesses. It highlights the challenges faced by these businesses, including limited access to financial services and the power of local governments to prohibit cannabis within their jurisdictions. The article emphasizes the need for regulatory and tax reforms to support the profitability of cannabis companies. It also discusses the varying approaches to cannabis regulation at the federal, state, and local levels, as well as the role of direct democracy in cannabis reform efforts. The article concludes by suggesting that potential cannabis business owners should wait for meaningful reforms before entering the industry.
