- Title
SIR JOHN F. W. HERSCHEL.
- Abstract
The article focuses on astronomer John F. W. Herschel, one of the first Englishmen who became interested in making pictures by the action of light. Herschel first described the process of fixing, which makes use of a chemical known as sodium thiosulphate, in a notebook which he wrote in January 29, 1839. It claims that gelatin was first used for coating dry plates in 1871, the year Herschel died. Few years later, black and white photographs became a reality. It states that the portrait of Herschel, which was taken in 1867, is one English photographer Julia Margaret Cameron's finest portraits.
