NOTHING COULD BE FINER?
- Abstract
The article explores the history of motion pictures depicting North Carolina through an analysis of the short film "Tar Heel Family," directed by George Stoney. The author reflects on films such as "North Carolina: The Tarheel State" and "North Carolina: Variety Vacationland" that promote tourist development, consumerism, and vacation sites. Emphasis is given to ways in which Stoney's film departs from other films made for public campaigns such as portrayals of diversity, the effect of industry on the state's ecology, and calls for social activism.
