- Abstract
The article discusses the production, remake and restoration of film "Pépé le moko." The film was directed by Julien Duvivier and featured actor Jean Gabin as the antihero. Erich von Stroheim convinced MGM to buy remake rights over the film for $38,000. However, Gabin refused to travel to the U.S. to shoot the remake under the same director. Nevertheless, the remake of the film, entitled "Algiers," was shot with Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr playing the lead roles. The restoration of the original film by distributor StudioCanal and the remarketing of the film by Rialto Pictures are also discussed.
