- Title
The Witlings: Frances Burney's "Essay on Criticism"?
- Authors
Ray, J. Karen
- Abstract
The article discusses 18th century novelist Frances Burney's 1779 play "The Witlings." The author states that Burney's father was against her writing the play because of its allusions to hostess Elizabeth Montagu and the Bluestockings women's social movement. The author talks about the different layers of satire and their targets in the play, including the mixing of social classes occurring at the end of the 18th century. The article cites poet Alexander Pope's "Essay on Criticism." The characters of the play are analyzed, including Lady Smatter and her sidekick Dabler.
