- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the popularity and notoriety of the 18th-century English actor David Garrick. Comments are given highlighting his popularity and also his particularly large-scale publicity within the media of his era. Focus is given to the detractors and critics of Garrick, examining both the forms of media through which Garrick was criticized as well as the topics and policies which made Garrick a target. Satirical editorial caricatures, public essays, and contemporary plays are each discussed in turn as examples of his critical opposition.
