- Title
In a World of Mandates, Making Space for Inquiry.
- Authors
Guccione, Lindsey M.
- Abstract
The author discusses how she incorporated inquiry-based literacy learning into her classroom in spite of her school's uniform curriculum, which was written to meet the needs of a variety of learners, but left little room for teacher autonomy. The author expresses her preference for constructivism over behaviorism as an educational philosophy. Philosopher John Dewey's ideas about the educational benefits of inquiry-based learning are examined. The author describes the afternoon inquiry system that she developed for her classroom, explaining the classroom activities, visual aids, and the enthusiasm the students showed for the project.
