- Abstract
This article presents a review of the five pillars of literacy and their popularity in research and practice. The five pillars of literacy were the result of an assessment of the status of research-based knowledge, including the effectiveness of various approaches to teaching reading. The National Reading Panel reported that there were five areas related to reading instruction in which substantial research had been performed. The five areas were as follows: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
