- Abstract
The article reports on a teaching technique developed to help students gain a broader vocabulary and encourage "word consciousness." The author conducted research on his methods in a fifth grade classroom. Using a vocabulary word taken from a reading assignment, the word was divided into morphemes and written on a blackboard. The students were encouraged to add words which had similar morphemes to the original examples. A classroom discussion ensued in which the definition of the word roots was determined.
