- Abstract
The printer's craft has undergone significant transformation since the appearance of printing in Québec in 1764. Over the past 200 years, it has gone from an artisan production, in which the master printer transmitted his knowledge to his apprentices through mentorship, to an industrial production based on an increasing division of labour and major technological changes. This article presents the principal stages of the evolution of the craft from the artisan of the 19th century, who also played a role as journalist, bookseller and publisher, slowly giving way to the professionalisation of the trades of bookseller and publisher, to finally give way to the specialised and commercial printers of the 20th century.
