The article discusses a paper by F. Fiegna, G.J. Velicer and colleagues about the social behavior of spore-forming bacterium Myxococcus xanthus. The bacterium was shown to have the ability to escape from social collapse and extinction with single mutation that has a dramatic effect. Evidence are provided that a cooperative system can recover from the very brink of destruction.
