- Title
BELLEBELLE: A GHOST MISTRESS FOR HENRY II.
- Authors
SHORT, IAN
- Abstract
The article considers the historiography of the identity of Bellebell, an unidentified person who appeared as a line item of the cost of clothing purchased for the Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine in the Pipe Roll 30 Henry II. The Latin inscription is provided as well as a likely translation. The author argues that "Bellebell'" could well indicate a Middle English or Anglo-Norman term meaning jewelry, trinket, or bauble.
