- Abstract
Abiotic stresses are responsible for significant yield loss in field crops due to drastic impact of adverse climatic conditions on plant growth and development. Due to water intensive nature of rice crop, drought stress is a major threat causing more than 90% losses in the rice production. Huge yield loss is the result of adverse effect at morphological, physiological, biochemical as well as molecular level. Drought tolerance is a complex quantitative trait governed by several factors including genetic, physiological, biochemical, management, etc. To facilitate the development of rice varieties with drought tolerance, a comprehensive knowledge of various mechanisms that influence rice yield under water stress condition is a prerequisite. For understanding and investigating complex drought stress tolerance mechanism, recent advancement in omics technologies have opened new avenues for researchers. In this review, we are focusing on the overview of the current status of drought tolerance research and improvement of drought tolerance cultivars by various omics approaches.
