- Abstract
Olumo Rock is a site located in Abeokuta, South/West Region, Ogun State, about 100 kilometres away from Lagos. It is an archaeological and paleontological site that exhibits an outstanding world class or exposure of richest rock tool about 1.5 million years ago. Olumo rock is regarded as site with well preserved and complete lithic assemblages such as hand axes, artificially shaped spherical rocks, pick-like tools and hammer rocks. Apart from a fountain, an auditorium and a gallery of the art at the base of the rock, the site possesses other interesting features, such as the Panseke Gardens, which is deeply shaded by tall Dongoyaro. However, in this research we shall be interrogating: How sustainable protection if any affected the preservation of Olumo Rocks as a world heritage site of the sub-Saharan African nation? Or Can sustainable protection be conceived as a recipe for preservation of Olumo Rocks, or is it a barrier to its outstanding universal value as the world heritage site? To what extent can Africa’s heritage be used to shape and secure a sustainable future for the continent?
