- Abstract
The book "With this burden we are born as women" by Mercedes Alcalá Galán analyzes the discourses about the female body in Cervantes' Spain, focusing on the work of Miguel de Cervantes and the issues faced by his female characters. The study reveals the restrictions imposed on women regarding their sexuality and reproductive function during that time. The author conducts a historical and literary investigation to examine these ideas and recover the silenced subjectivity of women in that era. The article "Mothers in Cervantes: trapped in narrative ellipsis" addresses the topic of motherhood and its treatment in literature, highlighting the misogynistic view of motherhood and the commodification of breast milk. The exemplary novel "La señora Cornelia" is also mentioned, which addresses themes such as secret marriage, childbirth, breastfeeding, and the restoration of women through marriage.
