- Abstract
A sample of the Ulu-Telyak oxidized manganese ore is studied by using various methods of elemental and phase analysis. The chemical and X-ray diffraction methods established that this sample contains mostly oxidized manganese in the form of minerals of the psilomelane-vernadite group. To determine the average degree of oxidation of manganese in ores, it is sufficient to calculate the contents of total manganese and manganese (IV). Oxalate, sulfate, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, iodide-acetic acid, and X-ray spectral methods of determination of manganese (IV) content are examined. An oxalate method is recommended for accurate calculation of manganese (IV) and the degree of its oxidation, and a sulfate method is recommended if there is a clayey portion in materials. The results of the analysis are proved to be correct by the certified reference material of manganese ore and manganese oxides. The other methods can be used only to evaluate the degree of oxidation and content of manganese (IV) in the cases that do not require high accuracy. The X-ray spectral method of determination of Mn (IV) by a Spectroscan Max GV spectrometer is characterized by low accuracy and is not recommended for use because of the distortion of Mn K β spectral line.
