- Abstract
In order to solve the problem of formaldehyde release of traditional medium density fiberboard (MDF), in this study, MDF was prepared with wood fiber as the raw material and eco-friendly chitosan as the binder. The effect of chitosan addition amount on the physical and mechanical properties of MDF was studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and other analytical and testing methods were used to characterize the micromorphology, physical and chemical properties of the fiberboard. The results showed that the addition of chitosan can effectively improve the physical and mechanical properties of fiberboard. When the amount of chitosan was 4%, the physical and mechanical properties of MDF were better, with the bending strength of 15 MPa, the elastic modulus of 1 896 MPa, the internal bonding strength of 0.64 MPa, and the water absorption thickness expansion rate of 15.5%. The results could provide ideas and references for the preparation of environmentally friendly fiberboard.
