- Abstract
The article discusses research investigating the fate of microorganisms which are indicators for environmental quality, such as water quality, under nutrient management plans (NMPs). NMPs that involve the application of wastewater from concentrated animal feeding systems are designed to meet crop water and nutrients requirements with the assumption that pathogenic microorganisms will die-off within the root zone where they are retained. The team tested the assumption by setting up a field pilot test and monitoring the fate of several fecal indicator microorganism including Enterococcus, fecal coliforms, and somatic coliphage. Additional laboratory tests including batch survival experiments to quantify microorganism transport were conducted. Results from the experiments are presented.
