- Abstract
A potential ban on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer goods by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) could have an impact on North America. PFAS are a class of chemicals used in various industries for their desirable properties. The proposed ban aims to reduce PFAS emissions and make products safer. If implemented, manufacturers in European countries would cease production and export of products containing PFAS, affecting imports and exports to and from European Union nations. Some states in the United States and provinces in Canada have already implemented restrictions on PFAS. The goal is to protect public health by limiting the release of potentially toxic PFAS compounds. Water utilities may need to invest in equipment to remove PFAS if the bans are implemented, and consumer goods companies should also remove PFAS from their waste streams.
