- Abstract
Topical minoxidil, a medication commonly used for treating hair loss, has shown potential for promoting nail growth. Slow nail growth or growth arrest can be a cosmetic concern and cause functional issues for individuals with nail dystrophy or other conditions. While systemic biotin and zinc have been shown to increase nail plate thickness, their effect on nail growth rate is still being investigated. Topical minoxidil, which increases cutaneous blood flow, has been found to have a positive effect on nail growth rate. However, further research is needed to determine the best protocol for using topical minoxidil for nail growth, including dosage, duration of treatment, and formulation.
