By tradition, the sigmoid volvulus was thought to be a result of sigmoid rotation along the axis of the mesentery, resulting in a closed-loop obstruction. The distinction of volvulus types is not possible on simple abdominal radiographs but on CT imaging, it is customarily the case. Atamanalp and colleagues provided hypotheses to explain the divergence of incidence of sigmoid volvulus types on medical reports.
