The article discusses the charity-related work that was carried out by Mary Mee, 2nd Viscountess Palmerston to her son, Lord Palmerston and discusses the concept of scientific philanthropy and the setting up of the schools of industry in England. Topics include the influence of Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford on the charitable work of Lady Palmerston, and the curriculum at Lady Palmerston's school which along with academic knowledge taught skills like spinning, knitting, and dressmaking.
