- Abstract
In 1945, the image of the atomic explosion in Hiroshima during the Second World War was established as one of the most powerful symbols in the popular imagination constituted around nuclear technologies in the twentieth century. Due to the overwhelming destruction of the attack, unprecedented in history, the representations of the event in the media were strongly influenced by a mythological perspective. Based on the bibliographic research methods and the myth criticism, the present paper on the comics study field investigates the archetypical symbols manipulated in the manga Barefoot Gen (1973-1974). The investigation shows that the symbols of fire, shadows, and of regenerative wheat were deliberately applied to reaffirm the myth of a redemptive end of the world.
